Fumaiolo chooses sustainability

Fumaiolo always increasingly sustainable. This Romagna food company, which produces frozen fresh pasta and fresh piadina, has decided to change its packaging to compostable products.

Alessandro Caminati, CEO, explains why: «This change is the result of a precise path, in accordance with the values on which Fumaiolo is based, that is the quality and authenticity of our products. We wanted to make what we put on the market completely natural, therefore, in addition to never having used artificial preservatives and flavourings, packaging will also be sustainable from now on. Although this is a goal that we set ourselves some time ago, we are only now able to achieve it. Given the specific nature our product, it was not easy to find a supplier who could produce a completely compostable container suitable for frozen foods, above all because of the difficulty of finding a protective film that did not detach from the tray in the freezer. We found the perfect partner in Biopap, a company from Settimo Milanese: they only use renewable raw materials and their own photovoltaic system produces green electricity».

Fumaiolo has already started using the new biodegradable and compostable containers to distribute the larger pasta shapes and frozen meat sauce. The trays can also be used in the microwave, the meat sauce can thus be thawed and heated directly, without dirtying pans.

All other products – small pasta shapes, piadinas and tortelli sulla lastra (stuffed pasta baked over a hot stone) – are still sold in plastic bags, but the company has also been studying the best solution for some time now to convert all packaging and make it entirely compostable.

The new trays will be officially presented on 15th and 16th January in Bologna, at Marca 2020, the exhibition dedicated to the private label. For further information, visit the Fumaiolo stand in Hall 25, in areas B137 – C136.
